We are proud to introduce Safecity's Course in Employ Batons and
Handcuffs recognised by licensing authorities in Tasmania, Western
Australia, NSW, Victoria and ACT.
There have been recent and past events involving the deaths and serious
injuries sustained by offenders, and many deaths and serious injuries of poorly
trained security officers. This clearly demonstrates the urgent need for a
nationally recognised, competency based training program in weaponless tactics
baton and handcuffs.
The current improvements in the training standards of security guards
surprisingly overlooked the fact that officers often need to use defensive
skills. Security Officers are often faced with scenarios which call for serious
tactical decisions--yet they receive little or no training in these important
issues. There is ample evidence to suggest that few Australian security
providers and employers of security officers would be able to successfully
defend a lawsuit claim from their employees based on lack of duty of care and
OH&S issues.
Even more disturbing is the fact that many offenders and their families
are able to capitalise on this lack of training. As a result, it is not
difficult for blatant offenders to use the court system to obtain large payouts
from their victims.
When Safecity began researching the need for such a product in the
Australian security industry, we identified four major groups.
1. Employers who did not care about the level of training of their
officers in defensive skills or other areas.
2 Employers who relied on their staffs martial arts, boxing, wrestling
skills or sheer physical size.
3. Employers who relied on training offered by friends who were experts in
martial arts or had police or military background.
4. Employers who took a great deal of trouble to train their staff but
used unqualified or poorly qualified trainers, or used courses which were
designed for countries where violent crime is out of control.
We found that most security providers and security officers favour
professionalism and appropriate training. We were greatly encouraged by the
enthusiasm and support we received when we initially announced our decision to
produce the two programs.
