I am already employed in the security or asset maintenance industry and I want to progress my training.  How do I start a traineeship?

If you are already employed a
traineeship may still be available to you, for example to progress from Certificate II in Security to Certificate III or to obtain qualifications which are required for you to retain your job. However, the following conditions apply.

  • You must not have been employed for longer than 3 months if employed full time
  • You must not have been employed for longer than 12 months if employed part-time or casual.

Discuss your intention to progress your qualifications with your employer.  For security officers holding the Certificate II in Security (Guarding( your progression can include Firearms Training, Defensive Tactics Baton and Handcuffs and the Unit "Manage Dogs for Security Patrols" Safecity's nationally recognised Dog Handler Course!

If you are involved in the Asset Maintenance Industry you could obtain senior qualifications which may help you attract a managerial position.

Check the list of available traineeship courses for your State and progress!  Training is free and your employer also reaps the benefits.

I am a woman.  I have considered working in the security protection industry but I am concerned about what will be involved and the people I will be working with.  What can I expect if I decide to enter the industry?
At the moment there are considerable opportunities for intelligent, dynamic women to enter the industry.  The New Australian Security Industry of the future demands well trained, ethical and customer oriented professionals.  Women have proven to be a true asset to providers of security protection services.

Whilst it is true that there are still a number of undesirable elements in our industry--they are on the way out.  Authorities are determined to stamp out and eliminate rogue trainers, providers and security guards from the industry.  The future of the New Australian Security Industry is bright and those who come in at the starting point will reap the most benefits.

At Safecity all traineeships courses and training activities are conducted in a supportive and friendly environment.  We have zero tolerance for racist or sexist behaviour in our classrooms. Our training delivery staff are experienced security operatives who have invested time and money to become qualified adult education facilitators.  Most importantly our training delivery staff enjoy helping people.  There is no room at Safecity for rude, arrogant, egotistical classroom tyrants.

Safecity Quality Assurance is in charge to ensure that all aspects of our traineeship courses are conducted in accordance with our Ethical Standards and Procedures.  You can find out all about Safecity's Policy on this website.

A Registered Training Provider told me he could shorten the course to only a few days or offered me a certificate without study if I paid him a sum of money.
We are aware (and so are the authorities) that some unethical RTO's are stooping to fraudulent practices.  Safecity's Certificate II in Security (Guarding) courses are conducted over a minimum of 100 hours as required by VETAB and ARC. If you are offered "easy" certificates report the matter to ARC, in the ACT Phone 62057055.  In NSW call the NSW Police Security Industry Registry Unit Phone 1300362001.

If you have obtained a fraudulent certificate in the past,
be sure to undertake the correct training.  Your lack of knowledge will show up sooner or later.  Lack of competency in security procedure can result in devastating lawsuits against you, your employer and your client.
