Poor Training and
Management of Security Screener Personnel
Vs
Quality Training and Dynamic Management in a Team Environment
The damaging effects of poor training and poor management of security screening staff
The
well advertised recent airport security breaches in Sydney and Melbourne, and
the easy theft of laptops and other highly classified information from
Government and law enforcement offices, are a clear indication that the training
provided to X-Ray Screeners and Checkpoint Security operators should be improved
with the utmost urgency.
Other serious breaches of security in Government Departments and Law Enforcement
Agencies reveal a chronic lack of quality training which needs to be rectified.
It is very clear that the abysmal level of the quality of our security had never
been seriously tested and therefore problems remained undetected--it is being
tested now!
After interviewing Government security agents and Airport Security screeners, it
is obvious that the fault does not lie with the security personnel -- but with
the trainers and employers.
Common training faults are ....
Training conducted in a cavalier atmosphere, with trainers stooping to constant overtures to alcoholism, sexist and racist remarks. (Some training even conducted in public bars.)
Lack of assessment causing all participants to graduate irrespectively of competency
Certificates of competency handed out without any training
Course participants left alone in front of a PC or a Video during training
Lack of professionalism or care in the delivery of training material
Aggressive and belligerent trainers belittling course participants
Common faults with employers or senior management
Lack of resources and equipment for x-ray screeners and airport security screening staff
Lack of team spirit resulting in conflict, bullying and disjointed performance
Poor support for airport security officers and checkpoint security. These officers are regular victims of abuse and physical attacks by passengers and visitors--this abuse resulting in chronic stress, alcoholism and drug abuse.
Poor or no training
Absence of pre-employment checks for x-ray screeners and airport security staff
Lack of communication between management and security staff (some x-ray screeners had never met their managers)
Absence of security policies on information classification and access control
Low pay and below average conditions for x-ray screeners and security checkpoint staff
The list goes on ....
On the
other hand we have dedicated terrorists who are drug and alcohol free,
extremely well trained and equipped; supported at every level by their peers and
superiors. No wonder they are able to walk through our most secure areas
and steal and destroy any of our valuable assets with ease.
It is time for Governments and employers to take security training seriously.
It is time for Governments and security managers to insist that their security
trainers be ethical, proficient and competent people dedicated to the success of
their students. Act now --- while you still have time.
